ABOUT THE STUDENT GRANT PROGRAM
MISSION STATEMENT The primary purpose of the Student Grant Program is to promote and support student research, scholarship and creative activity at the University of Idaho with a program funded by students, administered by students and available to all students, undergraduate, graduate and law, at the University of Idaho.
STUDENT GRANT PROGRAM HISTORY The University of Idaho Student Grant Program (SGP) began as a student-led initiative to create funding opportunities for student scholastic activities at the University of Idaho. In the spring of 2006, students presented their ideas to the Student Fees Committee and requested that $5.00 per student be collected to fund the program. The proposal was accepted by the committee and approved by University President Tim White and the State Board of Education. Fees were collected for the program for the first time in the fall semester of 2006 and the first Request for Proposals (RFP) was sent out that same semester.
ADMINISTRATION OF THE SGP The Student Grant Program is overseen by a steering committee comprised of student representatives from each College at the University of Idaho. These representatives are appointed by the Associate Dean (or his/her equivalent) of each College and serve on a volunteer basis. The committee is responsible for all aspects of program administration, including establishment of policies and bylaws, proposal review, and disbursement of funds. The SGP is not directly associated with any of the student government organizations.
The SGP Committee believes that, as the primary source of funding for the program, students have the right to know the details of activities supported by their fees. Therefore, begining in the spring of 2007, the SGP Committee will issue on a semesterly basis reports that summarize its activities and finances. The reports will be available to everyone through the SGP website and will be sent to the student government organizations as well as University of Idaho administrators.
